I love teaching Second Grade! I received my BA in English Literature from UC Santa Barbara and my MAED in Elementary Education from the University of Phoenix. I have been married to Mr. Jenkins for 17 years and have 3 amazing children: Drake (13), Paladin (11), and Ivy (7). We are an Ice Hockey and Soccer family 7 days a week.
Arrival and Dismissal: The school day begins at 8:30 am every morning. Students will be allowed to enter the classroom between 8:15 and 8:30. PLEASE do not drop them off earlier as they will NOT be allowed to enter the classroom. Dismissal will be at 3:15 pm. Please be sure to follow the proper drop-off and pick-up procedures to ensure that those processes will run smoothly.
Students with good attendance and who are on time tend to do better academically. Please make sure your child is at school on time and regularly. Morning work starts immediately at 8:30. Students who arrive after 8:30 will be marked late. If you do arrive late, please sign your child in at the main office.
When your child arrives in the classroom, it is his/her responsibility to hang up their coat, stow their backpack and deliver any parent/teacher communication. Please help him/her become organized and remember everything they need to bring to school so that they will have a successful day!
Homework: Every child will be expected to read for 15-20 minutes a night. They can either read independently or with a sibling/parent. Please refer to the suggested reading list posted on our class website. Homework will come home in the form of a packet with each night's homework clearly labeled. Please refer to the top of each page to find daily coding. Homework will be checked daily.
The packet will come home in the student’s homework folder and must return each day in the same folder. This should take no more than 30 minutes. The homework is an extension of what we do in class and a way for your child to practice what they are learning. Please set up a routine for your child to do his/her homework and reading. He/she should have a quiet place to work that is stocked with pencils, crayons, a desk or table, and you to help, when needed.
Parent Involvement: As you are aware, family involvement is a large component of Somerset’s charter and a part of classroom life. It is important to be connected to what your child is doing at school. There will be ongoing opportunities, repeating commitments, as well as one-time opportunities to help out. Please fill out the attached questionairre concerning your interests and availability and we will make arrangements for you to help. Please know that your service is greatly respected and appreciated!
Home-School Folder: The homework folder will be established during the first month of school. Thank you for your patience. Every day your child will bring his/her home-school folder to and from school. One side of the folder will have items to be kept at home. The other side will have items that need to be returned to school (permission slips, homework, etc.). Please set up a routine for where your child should put their folder each evening so that you can look through it and return it to school the following day. Homework will be in the folder on a daily basis and needs to be returned the next day. It is essential that the folder gets turned in each day so that you can get notes/information safely sent home.

HOMEWORK Homework will be assigned Monday. Students will receive a weekly newsletter with spelling words and upcoming events on it, but homework for reading, math, spelling, and their reading log will be assigned on scootpad.com. If a math worksheet is sent home for practice then the student does not need to practice math on the computer that evening. Parents’ will receive an email inviting them to scootpad.com. I will also send home a letter with your students’ user name and password. If your child does not have internet access, please let me know so that I can prepare homework to be sent home. Students are expected to read at least 15 minutes each night as part of their assigned homework.
This will be the first time that I have used scootpad.com. So please be understanding if I need to make adjustments along the way.
SPELLING Students will bring home a list of spelling words each Monday. Spelling tests will be on Fridays.
MAKE-UP WORK If a student is absent, the make-up work assignments he or she missed will be sent home. Sufficient time will be allowed for completion. If the work is not returned by the given due date, the student will not receive credit.
